About Woodpecker Guide

Woodpecker Guide is an independent resource for backyard birdwatchers who want to understand and attract Downy, Hairy, Red-bellied, Northern Flicker, and Pileated Woodpeckers. We focus on practical, biologically accurate advice — the kind that actually explains what’s happening when a woodpecker starts drumming on a gutter, not generic songbird advice repackaged with a different bird’s name on it.

Our Approach

Woodpeckers have genuinely distinctive biology: they excavate their own nest cavities in dead or dying wood rather than using a box or building a woven nest, they communicate through drumming as much as through vocal calls, and their diet centers on wood-boring insects extracted with a specialized barbed tongue. We write from that biology outward, not from a generic songbird template.
